Hot Stones in a Massage, Why Get One?

Are you looking to mix up your usual massage? Maybe some special kind of massage that uses smooth, basalt river or volcanic stones that are heated and applied to the body might be what you want and need!

The Hot Stone Massage is said to be connected to ancient Mayan practices, however, it is in India that we find its true birthplace. 5000 years ago, practitioners of an ancient Indian healing tradition called Ayurveda used tools from the earth like herbs, flowers, crystals, and stones which were incorporated into breathing techniques, exercises, and massages. Depending on the practitioner, a hot stone massage is often combined with either a Swedish or Deep Tissue massage. Usually, a session may take 60 up to 90 minutes long as it takes preparation to ensure safety;

  • The heating of the stones is done depending on the therapist’s preference as some cover them with hot water in a heating device designed explicitly for hot stone massage and some use a crock pot. They are heated to a specific or desired temperature making sure not to burn the skin.
  • The application of a thin layer of massage oil or cream helps protect and prepare your skin.
  • Next comes the placement of the stones, which is along your spine but may also be placed on your face, chest, arms, legs, or feet depending on the type of massage you requested or considered to be best for you.

Therapists may also use these stones to massage into the layers of your warmed muscles which will help loosen up your muscles due to the heat. Knowing what to expect from a session is one thing, however, being prepared before getting a hot stone massage is a must here are some tips:

  • Drink water before the session, hydrated muscles are easier to work on by massage therapists and a hot stone will heat your body during the treatment so you must have had enough water beforehand.
  • Communicate with your therapist if this is your first time having a massage. It’s always best to let your therapist know if there’s anything that you’re uncomfortable with or if you also have multiple questions, it’s helpful to write them down and ask them early on before your session. This way, you can get these questions out of the way and you can fully relax during the treatment.
  • Consult your doctor first. Generally, a hot stone massage is safe for all adults unless you have a preexisting health condition like infection, heart condition, or injury as the heat of the stones may aggravate your symptoms. If you’re unsure about the treatment, discussing it with your healthcare provider is a must.

Care after a session is as important as before, so remember you need to rehydrate your body again and continue to do so for the rest of the day. It is also suggested to avoid strenuous activities and rest early so that your body can reap the overall benefits of the amazing experience it had just gone through. Asides from being able to help in loosening up tensed muscles, there are many other benefits to getting a Hot Stone Massage:

  • Promoting Good Sleep
  • Improving Mobility and Awareness of the Body
  • Reducing Anxiety and Depression
  • Improving Blood Flow
  • Boosting your Immune System
  • Eliminating Muscle Pains

So, don’t wait any longer to experience the wonders of a Hot Stone Massage. Remember, finding the right massage therapist is as important as finding the right doctor. Simply search for a massage spa nearby and talk to a trusted massage therapist today!
