What is Beauty?

Of all the questions one can ask about the beauty industry, “What is Beauty?” may be the most difficult to answer and define. Beauty is a broad topic purely because it is defined and seen differently by one’s culture, beliefs, views, standards and so much more.

The word itself “beauty” was derived from the old French “beaute”, based on the Latin “Bellus” meaning beautiful, fine. When it comes to the dictionary definition, beauty is considered by the qualities of physical attractiveness, which can be subjective by one’s standards.

Beauty standards are greatly influenced by one’s location, how? You ask. Well, let me take you back to 4,000 BC in ancient Egypt where makeup was used by the wealthy to look appealing to the gods or to look more god-like. There were also the ancient Greeks who were quite fond of unibrows due to their belief that beauty is in symmetry. Going by which part of the world you are in, the color of your skin determines how attractive one may be; if you are pale or fair skinned you are considered beautiful in the eastern part of the world like Korea and other Asian countries while tanned or darker complexions are the beauties for the western side like the United States.

Globally our beauty standards may be different but one theme in the beauty industry continues to bloom, being able to create healthy beauty. What are these improvements?

  • Incorporating skincare into makeup helps keep our skin healthy despite the all-day wear of makeup.
  • Acceptance and Awareness, the generation of the world wide web has opened many doors to sharing information and the beauty industry is certainly one that has taken a big stride in success because of the age of the internet.
  • Licensed beauty professionals like dermatologists and cosmetologists are people who have studied for years to ensure that we get healthy beauty.

Let’s get to know some of the professionals who are keeping us beautifully healthy:

  • Estheticians focus on cleansing the skin through facials, and full-body treatments like hair removal through waxing or laser treatments.
  • Massage Therapists use touch to heal a variety of painful ailments by decompressing tired and overworked muscles.
  • Makeup Artists produce an immediate change in a client’s appearance per the client’s need for an occasion like weddings, movies, television, photo shoots, and the list just goes on.
  • Cosmetologists are licensed professionals who can go beyond facials by providing cosmetic treatments to the hair and nails as well.
  • Dermatologists are board-certified medical doctors who specialize in treating conditions that affect the skin, hair, and nails like rashes, wrinkles, psoriasis, or melanoma.
  • Hairdressers or Hairstylists are often used interchangeably, but technically a hairdresser does shampooing, cutting, and coloring hair, while the hairstylists work on styles like curls, perms, and updos.
  • Nail Technician or Manicurist are often terms used interchangeably for a beauty specialist who is responsible for the grooming and appearance of a client’s fingernails and toenails. They also are considered nail artists as they do painting on nails.

There are more jobs and careers in the beauty industry today, if there is a specific beauty need you have there is most likely a professional who can help you. So, what are you waiting for?
